Lillet

Pronounced "lee-LAY," this French, wine-based aperitif is made of fruits and herbs and has a subdued bitter-orange taste. Dating from the late 17th century, this venerable mixer was first made in the French village of Podensac. Lillet Blanc, or blonde, is made from dry white wine and Lillet Rouge, or red, is made from red wine.

Lillet blonde (imagine that) is the key ingredient in James Bond's Martini derivative, the Vesper, a drink created in deference to the beautiful double agent in Ian Fleming's Casino Royale.
