The modifier, dry, perfect, or sweet, is based on the type of vermouth used in a cocktail. For instance, a dry Manhattan has 1/2 ounce dry vermouth, a perfect Manhattan has 1/4 ounce sweet and 1/4 ounce dry vermouth, and a sweet Manhattan has 1/2 ounce sweet vermouth (the same proportions work for the Martini).
