Cochineal
It's what used to give Campari
and sweet vermouth their ruby-red glow. A red dye and flavoring
made from the dried bodies of female cochineal insects typically found on prickly pear cactuses in
Mexico. Cochineal was also
once used in cosmetics and food coloring, and even made its way into the writings
of Emily
Dickinson.
